What You Need to Know About the P Visa

Posted by Jacqueline Delgado | Jan 12, 2022

The P Visa is a unique type of visa that allows foreign athletes, artists, and entertainers to live and work in the US. P Visas can also be granted to an applicant's spouse and children. If you are considering seeking a P Visa, then it is important to speak with an experienced immigration attorney who can help you determine eligibility and help you file your application.

What is a P Visa?

The P Visa allows foreign athletes, artists, and entertainers to live and work in the United States for varying lengths of time, with the potential for extensions. The different types of P Visas that are available include:

  • P-1A: Internationally Recognized Athlete
  • P-1B: Member of Internationally Recognized Entertainment Group
  • P-2: Performer or Group Performing Under Reciprocal Entertainment Exchange Program
  • P-3: Artist or Entertainer who is Part of a Culturally Unique Program
  • P-4: Spouse or Child of a P-1, P-2, or P-3 Visa holder

Most P Visas are granted for a period of one year, except for P-1A Visas, which can be valid for up to five years. Extensions can be obtained for P Visas under various circumstances. P Visas are nonimmigrant visas; this means that they are meant for a temporary stay. Immigrant visas are for individuals planning to stay, live, and work in the United States permanently. A P Visa holder can later seek a green card and eventual citizenship.

Who is Eligible for a P Visa?

There are specific eligibility requirements for the different P Visas. Only a small percentage of athletes, artists, and entertainers can obtain a P Visa. For example, a professional athlete seeking a P Visa must demonstrate that the professional team they plan to play for has a combined revenue that exceeds $10 million per year. Other types of evidence will also be required for a P Visa application. If you have legal questions, then call us so we can help!
